About this spot
Part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, Lyme Regis is a beautiful little town of 3,671 people. It is small but busy. The sandy beaches with promenade bring in the tourists and there is a busy little working harbour too with locals working their fishing and tourist boats. A lifeboat station can also be found in the harbour.

It is a place steeped in history. In Saxon times, the abbots of Sherborne Abbey had salt-boiling rights on land adjacent to the River Lym, and the abbey once owned part of the town. Lyme is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. In the 13th century, it developed as one of the major British ports. A Royal Charter was granted by King Edward I in 1284 when "Regis" was added to the town's name. The charter was confirmed by Queen Elizabeth I in 1591. In 1644, during the English Civil War, Parliamentarians withstood an eight-week siege of the town by Royalist forces under Prince Maurice. The Duke of Monmouth landed at Lyme Regis at the start of the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685.

The harbour wall is an ideal place to get photographs of both the beach and the comings and goings in the historic harbour (sitting between the two) as well as the distant cliffs of Black Ven and Charmouth.

The harbour wall can be accessed from the beach at low tide but does involve a little bit of climbing. I'd suggest it isn't for the elderly or infirm.
