About this spot
The Guardian of the Valleys Six Bells Memorial is a large sculpture located in the village of Six Bells, near Abertillery. It was erected in memory of the 45 miners who lost their lives in the Six Bells Colliery mining disaster of 1960. The 20ft tall steel sculpture depicts a miner holding a coal pick, with his head bowed in respect and his eyes closed. The sculpture was designed by artist Sebastien Boyesen and unveiled in 2010, on the 50th anniversary of the disaster. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the miners in the Welsh coal industry and honors their memory.
