United Kingdom Gordale Scar & Janet's Foss

About this spot
A little less famous than Malham Cove, just 1 mile down the road, this enormous limestone gorge is no less impressive. Formed in a similar way, first with glacial melt water, Gordale continues to have water flowing through it, creating a lovely waterfall at the base of the cliffs. Stood beneath the scar feels almost like you're in a cathedral rather than something formed naturally over thousands of years - with the cliffs overhanging in an impressive fashion.
Should you want to be a little more adventurous than the average visitor, it is perfectly possible to scramble up the waterfall, leading to a path that takes you by an impressively eroded arch and further falls upstream. In photos, this waterfall and associated scramble looks quite small but you'll probably think twice once you see it in real life.
