About this spot
Goli Otok, which means "Barren Island" in Croatian, is located in the Adriatic Sea and is part of Croatia. It was used as a political prison from 1949 to 1989 during the era of communist Yugoslavia, earning it the moniker "the Croatian Alcatraz." The prisoners held there were often political dissidents accused of supporting the rival Soviet Bloc after the Tito-Stalin split. The conditions were notoriously harsh, with forced labor, physical violence, and psychological pressure being common. Since the end of the Yugoslav era, Goli Otok has been largely uninhabited. The remains of the prison infrastructure still stand, serving as a haunting reminder of its past. Today, it's occasionally visited by tourists and is considered a powerful symbol of political repression during the period of communist rule.
