Be aware, all neighborhoods outside of the centre (zip code 1000) can be dangerous places at night, not in the least when alone and packed with expensive photo-equipment. If you can, visit with company...

About this spot
With this largest freight station in Europe, in 1902 Belgium not only displayed its economic ambitions, but also its engineering skills. This impressive building was designed by the railway engineer Frédéric Bruneel, who will later also play an important role in the North-South connection in Brussels. Gare Maritime is 280 m long and 140 m wide and consists of three large halls with a span of 26 m and four small halls with a width ranging from 12 to 16 m. On Picard Street, Gare Maritime is connected to the Hotel de la Poste and the Depot des Collies. The load-bearing structure of the halls consists of series of three-hinged arch trusses. These are trusses that consist of hinges in the ridge and at the base, so that they can absorb the movements of the steel structure. The structure was designed and decorated with art-nouveau style ornaments that were just emerging at the time. Typical for that time is the engineering approach to ornamentation. Each ornament has a function. For example, the angled plugs at the gutters actually serve to absorb the transverse force.

Together with Antwerp station, the Gare Maritime is the last remaining station from that period with an original roof.
