THE MUSEUM IS LOCATED IN THE FARM OF THE CASTLE OF TERHULPEN
In the 1990s, Folon developed the idea of bringing together a selection of his work, representative of his forty-year career, in one place for the general public.
Interesting locations were offered to him from France and Italy. Nevertheless, he finally agreed to Wallonia's proposal to house his foundation in the old square farm of the castle of La Hulpe. The farm is located in the Solvay regional domain, one of the most beautiful hiking spots in our country, 15 minutes from Brussels. He remembered 'the park with the 1000 Rhododendrons' from his childhood, when he lived nearby (Genval). As a champion of nature, he could not imagine a better environment for his art. The museum opened its doors in October 2000.
The contemporary artist Jean-Michel Folon became known in various fields including painting, illustration and sculpture. Born in Belgium, Folon studied architecture at the Institut St. Luc in Brussels. He started making art as a watercolourist. Jean-Michel Folon's first exhibition, held in New York in 1969, took place at the Lefebre Gallery.
As Folon's career took off, he also took up etching, paint, illustrations, mosaics and stained glass. Jean-Michel Folon participated in the Twenty-fifth Venice Biennale, a biennial celebration that brings together contemporary artists, dancers, architects and stage performers from around the world to share their work.
