About this spot
Ericeira (Eerie-cyra) is a small fishing village 45 minutes north of Lisbon. The constant breeze allows for cooler temperatures than some of its neighboring cities.

While most tourists skip it for Sintra, it is a surfer’s mecca. The city’s coastline faces the Atlantic Ocean and huge waves roll onto the beaches. Whether a beginner or a seasoned surfer, the surf here has you covered. It was declared a World Surfing Reserve in 2011—the only place in Europe acknowledged by the Save the Waves Coalition. Best time to surf is October to May.

The town doesn’t have a list of things to see and do—it is more of a soak up the beach, visit the local café, and try out the seafood kind of place. There are four sandy beaches, two great surfing beaches just a little further out and more challenging surfing beaches within the WSR (2 km north).

The town may be best known for its connection to King Manuel II. When the King was forced into exile in 1910, he and his family boarded their yacht to Gibraltar from Ericeira. He never returned to Portugal.
