About this spot
The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Zavelkerk is a church building in the Belgian capital Brussels on the Sablon. Although the church never got a tower for lack of resources, it is characteristic of the late Gothic style with its many flame-shaped elements and striking 14m high stained glass windows.

It is not entirely certain who the architects of the church are. For the oldest part, the choir, people think of Jan van Ruysbroeck who also designed the tower of the Brussels town hall. Lodewijk van Bodegem is almost certainly the master builder of the west facade (the main entrance) where the resemblance to the church of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse is striking. He was also the architect of the Broodhuis on the Grote Markt, where the Crossbowmen held their meetings during the time of Mary of Hungary.

The sculptures in the portals of the church usually date from the 19th or 20th century. The south portal is richly decorated with numerous Biblical figures. The tympanum shows a figure of Christ surrounded by numerous saints. This portal can be found in the painting Wedding of the Virgin by Robert Campin in the Prado.
