About this spot
As its name indicates, these are sand dunes of a beautiful strong ochre tint. The extremely fine sand, Navajo sandstone ground and sifted by wind over and over again, becomes an extraordinary pink in the setting sun. The dunes are formed by hot air currents coming from the south and accelerating as they pass through Moccasin Gap, seen to the southwest of the viewpoint. These currents lose their speed when coming in contact with cold air masses forming above the Grand Staircase region and deposit sand in this area.
