About this spot
Fort La Chartreuse is a fort built for the defense of the Belgian city of Liège. It was built on the Mont Cornillon by the Dutch in 1817 and came into the hands of the Belgians after the Belgian Revolution in 1830.
The fort played a role in the defense of Liège in the First World War. On August 5, 1914, the Germans attacked the eastern forts around Liège with infantry and artillery. The attackers were mowed away, the artillery shells had no hold on the reinforced concrete of the fortresses. Nevertheless, the Germans managed to penetrate through spaces between the fortresses. After heavy street fighting in Queue-du-Bois, on August 7, 1914, the hills east of Chartreuse were conquered, empty villages were found, and the population had fled. The next morning, Chartreuse was occupied and the Germans entered Liège via two undestroyed bridges. During the First and Second World War, Fort de la Chartreuse was used as a prison by the German occupying forces.
