Located on the Ile de la Cité, it extends over the square in front of Notre-Dame cathedral (the parvis Notre-Dame often called the Parvis de Notre-Dame in modern French). An archaeological crypt is also present, as well as several statues, including that of Charlemagne (Charlemagne and his Leudes).
Since September 3, 2006, the square has been called "Parvis Notre-Dame - Place Jean-Paul-II" in homage to Pope John Paul II who died on April 2, 2005. The change of name was the subject of a ceremony organized by the mayor of Paris, in the presence of the mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë, the archbishop of Paris Monsignor André Vingt-Trois, the apostolic nuncio Monsignor Fortunato Baldelli, and the clergy of Paris.
