About this spot
Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Construction began in 1672, when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire. Over the years, control of the fort changed hands to the British, back to Spain, and finally to the United States. It became a National Monument in 1933.
