About this spot
Camp Muir is located at the 10,188-foot level on Mt. Rainier. This not a place to go to view or photograph the mountain. The camp is a place to go for a broad vistas of the lands south and southwest of The Mountain. It is also a place to go for a cultural experience. Camp Muir is a gathering place for climbers preparing to ascend to the summit, starting around midnight. Many of the people there are clients of the Rainier Mountain guides and will be spending the night in a communal cabin. There is a beautiful rock building with a limited amount of bunks reserved for independent climbers. And there is always a scattering of tents belonging to independent climbers or to hikers who would like to spend the night at Camp Muir. Day hikers visit Camp Muir for the challenge and the view. Skiers and snow boarders make the trek for the joy of a long ride back down. This is not a casual hike, there is no trail on the Muir Snowfield and when clouds come in it is very easy to get lost and fall off a cliff. There is also the problem of the snow which can be icy hard and very slippery. The distance from Paradise to Camp Muir is 4.5 miles with an elevation gain of 4,600 feet.
