About this spot
The Big Obsidian Flow is a volcanic flow deposit, about 1,300 years old, covering about 1 square mile in the Newberry Caldera. It was formed in the last volcanic event at the Newberry Volcano and the youngest in Oregon. It is a popular attraction within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The rocks that make up the flow are a mixture of obsidian - black volcanic glass- and pumice - frothy vesicular glass, typically light in color. There is a 1-mile long loop trail through the lower portion of the flow.
