Shoot with care
This is a national park so rules apply. Do not climb on the buttes—it causes erosion. If you find a fossil leave it where it is, take a photo, and tell a Park Ranger what you have uncovered. Finally, keep a safe distance from wildlife—the Park recommends 100 feet.

About this spot
Many consider Big Badlands Overlook the best overlook in the Park, with a view towards the eastern portion of the Badlands. At sunrise, the sun’s first rays will light up the park’s ridgeline. This point provides a sweeping view of the zebra-striped hills in every direction.

It can be a good sunset location as well as sunrise. The best time to photograph the Badlands is the two hours around sunrise and sunset. The sun is low on the sky and lighting is softer. During mid-day the light can be very harsh.
