About this spot
The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865, over the issue of slavery in the United States. On April 9, 1865, Confederate (Southern, pro-slavery States) forces in the Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Federal (Northern States) forces under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The surrender took place in the home of Wilmer McLean in the village of Appomattox Station. Although the war continued for a time in more distant theaters, this event is considered to be the functional end of the war.

Today Appomattox Station is part of Appomattox Court House National Historic Park. Many of the current buildings were present in 1865. Others are recreations or replacement buildings
