About this spot
Xanthos (and its twin site Letoon about 5 km away) were major centres of Lycian civilization - Xanthos was the capital city of the Lycian Federation and its greatest city for most of Lycian history while Letoon served as its holy site. Xanthos illustrates the blending of Lycian traditions and Hellenic influence, especially in its funerary art. The inscriptions found here, especially on the 'Xanthian Obelisk' are instrumental in helping to begin to understand the Lycian people and their language.
