About this spot
West Thumb Geyser Basin is one of the most picturesque basins in the park, situated on the shore of Yellowstone Lake. West Thumb is a large bay on Yellowstone Lake, created by a caldera (a large volcanic crater, formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of the volcano) that erupted approximately 150,000 years ago (125,000-200,000). The caldera later filled with water and became an extension of Yellowstone Lake. Technically it is a caldera in the larger Yellowstone Caldera which formed 600,000 years ago and created most of the park. There are many thermal features found here as well as Yellowstone Lake.
