Excelsior Geyser was once considered the world’s largest geyser and up to the 1880s had eruptions up to 300 feet (91.44 m). It is thought that those violent eruptions may have caused damage to the geyser plumbing system and it is a very large thermal spring, 276 x 328 ft. (84 x 100 m) discharging 4500 gallons (17034 L) per minute.
Since the thermal pool is large, and in a bit of a crater, it is usually covered with dense steam. Therefore I prefer to photograph it from the side, capturing the runoff as it descends into the Firehole River.
