Midway Geyser Basin (MGB) General

Midway Geyser Basin is a small area that contains two of the largest features in the park, Grand Prismatic Spring and Excelsior Geyser. Technically part of the Lower Geyser Basin, due to its isolated location and the pattern of the road, this area became known as Midway Geyser Basin. In 1889, Rudyard Kipling, visited the park and referred to this area as “Hell’s Half Acre.” Prior to 1900’s Excelsior Geyser would erupt up to 300 feet (91.4 m) high. Now it is known as a large hot spring pouring more than 4050 gallons of boiling water per minute, most of which goes into the Firehole River.
