MHS - Palette Springs

Mammoth Hot Springs is the name given to a large complex of hot springs located on a hill of travertine in the northern section of the park. Terrace Mountain is the largest known carbonate depositing spring in the world. The formation has formed over thousands of years creating the huge travertine terraces you see. The thermal activity has shifted greatly in this area, sometimes taking decades and sometimes as abruptly as in a matter of days. Due to recent earthquake activity the springs have shifted rendering many areas dry. The active areas are stained brown, green, orange, and red with thermophiles, bacterium or other microorganisms, living in the pools of thermal water. The whole mass is made up of several named sections. Palette Springs is one of these sections and in recent years has stayed active.
