About this spot
Willance's Leap is so named after Robert Willance who, in 1606, got lost in fog whilst out on his horse and ended up running off the edge of the cliff. Robert survived, with broken bones, and was kept alive by keeping himself warm inside his dead horse - his grave can still be found in the C of E church in Richmond. The location is beautiful even without the history though, with endless views up lower Swaledale.
