About this spot
Sutton Scarsdale Hall is a Grade 1 listed
Georgian stately home, now a ruin. The hall, as it stands, is actually the fourth or fifth house to be built and in design appears close to that of Chatsworth House . The house was eventually
owned by the Arkwrights, the same family
that kick-started the industrial revolution in Cromford. After years of neglect the house was sold and stripped of its assets by the new owners, with even the roof being removed. Now, all that remains is an empty shell, which is owned by English Heritage and forms part of the triangle of halls in the area. The other two
are Bolsover Castle and Hardwick Hall.
