Wingfield Manor is an imposing palatial
medieval manor house, which now lies in ruins under the ownership of the English Heritage. It was built in the 1440s for Lord Cromwell, Treasurer of England. Later on, though, it became the home of the Earl of Shrewsbury who imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots here on several occasions.
Despite its rich history, many will pass by the ruins of the manor without noticing it as they drive by on the road from South Wingfield to Crich.
