About this spot
Magpie Mine is a disused 19th-century lead mine and the vast selection of buildings and workings on the site are one of the best examples in the UK. However, most mistake the actual mine for being the iconic buildings, especially the old engine house, when in fact it is actually a now-covered shaft located away from the main area.
The main shaft has iron bars covering it,
allowing you to stand looking down the
208m-deep hole, wondering what lies beyond the depths you can see into.
Because the site is so well preserved, it allows great photographic opportunity to capture what a working lead mine site might have once looked like.
