Alport Castles is a remote location off the
Snake Pass close to Ladybower. It is quoted that Alport Castles is the largest landslide in the UK, but that title more likely belongs to sites on the Isle Of Skye such as the Quiraing. Nevertheless, it is an impressive location with lots of drama and sheer scale. It derives its name from the gigantic boulders looking like castles from down in the valley below, with the main pinnacle of rock sticking out, resembling a motte-and-bailey castle. This is locally known as ‘The Tower’.
Not only is this a great spot to photograph
landscapes, but also wildlife such as ravens and falcons have been reported to nest on the crags. Such a geological marvel means that quite often you will see geologists wearing hard hats, making their way up.
