About this spot
Birchen Edge is the last of the eastern edges horseshoe and is close to the market town of Chesterfield. It is smaller than the neighbouring edges but provides interesting viewpoints such as Nelson’s Monument, which was erected in 1810 in honour of Lord Nelson.
Close to the monument are ‘Nelson’s Three Ships’. These are three gritstone formations engraved with the ships’ names ‘Victory’ ‘Defiance’ and ‘Royal Soverin’ (spelt as named). Underneath the edge grows a canopy of birch trees which add a different dimension compared to the other edges.
Nelson’s Monument was erected only 5 years after his death, while it took London 60 years to build their monument in Trafalgar Square. It is a concrete column around 10ft high with a sphere at the top. The monument does not mark the summit of the edge but is perhaps the most prominent location along the whole edge.
