About this spot
Carl Wark is a gritstone promontory and IronAge hill fort on Hathersage Moor facing the Burbage Valley and Higger Tor. On one side of the fort is a prehistoric embankment which is believed to have served as a wall to protect the fort from its enemies. It is unknown when the embankment was constructed, today it is
well preserved and a clear evidence of its past.
The fort often plays second fiddle to Higger Tor, being featured in many of the photographs from there because of its distinctive shape. It’s a shame really, as Carl Wark has bounds of character and
views just as good as Higger Tor. Plus, you get a great view of the imposing Higger Tor itself which you simply don’t realise when taking pictures from up there.
One of the more pleasant things about Carl Wark is that it’s a much quieter spot and you will be hard pushed to bump into another photographer, you can simply say your hellos as you walk by them on Higger Tor.
