About this spot
Stanage Edge is one of the great icons within the Peak District and is world famous for climbers. At roughly 4 miles long, it is the longest gritstone edge in England and has over 1,000 recorded climbing routes on it. While abundantly popular for climbers it has massive potential for the photographer too.
With its length, there are many photographic opportunities ranging from low down by the roadside to high up shots along the edge.

Stanage is also perhaps the best example in the Peak District to go millstone hunting, something that allures many photographers each year. The
gritstone from the edge used to be made into millstones and transported away for sale. When the costs couldn’t be matched from competitors abroad the manufacturing process was simply
abandoned and existing millstones left out to weather on the moors. They are so much an icon of the Peak District, that the millstone is used to represent the National Park and one will usually welcome you when crossing the border.
