About this spot
Once in the square you’ll see the Palazzo Senatorio, with the Palazzo Nuovo on the left hand side and the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the right side; in the middle stands the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. Originally the paw of the horse, which is now raised in the air, rested on the severed head of a barbarian and the statue was completely gilded, as has been reproduced today after a long restoration. The square as seen today was designed by Michelangelo, but its construction took such a long time that it was completed only in the XVII century.
