About this spot
Isola Tiberina is the only island in the part of the Tiber river which runs through Rome, and is located in the southern bend of the Tiber. It is boat-shaped, and has been connected with bridges to both sides of the river since antiquity. Being the seat of the ancient temple of Asclepius and later a hospital, the island is associated with medicine and healing. The Fatebenefratelli Hospital founded in the 16th century, and the Basilica di San Bartolomeo all’Isola dating from the 10th century are located on the island. Just south of the island and directly beneath the modern Ponte Palatino there’s the only remaining arch of Pons Aemilius, the oldest Roman stone bridge in Rome. It once spanned the Tiber but has since collapsed and it is now nicknamed “Ponte Rotto”.
