About this spot
Early settlers in the Seattle area relied on boats to get around all the lakes, sloughs and The Sound, thereby avoiding the muddy roads and trails. The Center for Wooden Boats, located on the southern end of Lake Union, is dedicated to preserving the history of boats in the Pacific Northwest and in particular, the history of the smaller wooden boats. This is also the center for the preservation and construction of traditional, native, boats. The result is a colorful and unique marina and a small museum area with rotating exhibits. Classes are offered here on sailing, woodworking and even toy boat building. Boats - wood sail and row type - are available for rent from mid-April through early September. On Sundays you may sign up for a first-come chance to go out with a volunteer in one of the boats. Always fun, always free. When the Center is open, you are welcome to wander the docks, photograph the boats, and take a look in the museum and the woodworking area.
