The wild horses found along the Outer Banks are genetically related to the Spanish horses which escaped or were abandoned during the early period of New World explorations. The wild horse population used to number in the thousands, now there are only a couple of hundred remaining. Civilization and an expanding population has pushed these horses to the edge of extinction. The Currituck Wild Horses, also referred to as the Corolla Wild Horses, roam the forest, grasslands, sand dunes and the yards of houses at Carova Beach. When the temperatures are warm and the bugs ferocious, the horses will actually come out onto the beach and run through the salt water.
