About this spot
Hardy Monument stands on an exposed heathland location above the village of Portesham with views across to the coastline. The 72 ft high monument was built in 1844 in memory of Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, Flag Captain of HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. Hardy was famous for a number of things, one being the man in whose arms Nelson died, uttering the immortal words 'Kiss me Hardy' just before passing away.
