Horton Tower was at one point the tallest non-religious building in Britain; standing at 140 feet high (43 metres) it is a heavyweight ‘folly’ and they do not come much taller. It is unclear as to the purpose of the Folly; one theory suggests its owner, Humphrey Surt, had intended to use it for stargazing. However, popular consensus was that follies were built by rich eccentrics with no obvious purpose; an ostentatious decoration - an eye-catcher to be admired from their property. Still, this is a mightily impressive building.
