About this spot
The infamous Church Ope Cove is a small-secluded beach on the sheltered eastern side of Portland. Even when seas off Portland Bill are raging, the cove can be fairly calm – probably a key factor in it being such a popular haven for smugglers in wilder times of past centuries. The beach, once sand, has now been covered by an assortment of quarrying debris, much of it worn into attractive rounded pebbles and boulders - perfect foreground material. The cove, which sits far below the surrounding area, overlooked by Rufus Castle and protected on three sides by imposing cliffs, offers a wealth of shooting opportunities.
