To understand the appeal of this building (built 1963), you’ll need to understand the architectural style called Brutalism. Brutalism was a style that was popular between the 50s and 70s. Brutalist buildings are concrete structures that look imposing – like a military fortress. People tend to either love or hate this style. The style became very popular in Britain and many of the Brutalist buildings in Britain are now protected. Perhaps the most appealing example of Brutalist architecture in London is the National Theatre.
