About this spot
Beautiful forest, meadows, wildflowers, a waterfall, a lake, tarns, and the highest concentration of peaks over 7,000 in the Olympic Range are the features that make this area so special. The access to this fragile basin is a long steep slog, starting on the scenic Upper Dungeness River trail and paralleling the river for a mile before splitting off to enter the national park. Most people make camp at Royal Lake, located 7.2 miles from the trailhead. However, the real alpine scenery lies another mile above in Royal Basin, which is dotted with tarns and surrounded by jagged peaks.
