About this spot
Kerið is a volcanic crater lake in the Grímsnes area of South Iceland, close to Geysir and Gulfoss.
Kerið is about 55 metres (180 feet) deep, 170 metres (558 feet) wide and 270 meters (886 feet) in circumference. You can walk around the crater remand go down to the edge of the lake at the base of the crater.
It has amazing colour given that it is quite young in geological terms (about 3,000 years old) and the iron deposits give a deep red tint to the soil.
It is particularly colourful in winter with the water at the base frozen.
There is really only the one shot to be had, but given you will likely pass this on route to / from another destination, it is well worth the short stop and the crater is right next to the road, so there is no walk in required.
