About this spot
This spot formerly was the viewpoint for the Manning-Rye Covered Bridge which crossed the Palouse River. Unfortunately, the bridge was destroyed in a wildfire in the fall of 2020. The fire also burned down the house and barn on the southern side of the river that were accessed by the bridge.

While the bridge is gone, the view of the river is still good and includes basalt canyon walls and cliffs, aspen and cottonwood trees along the river, and pine trees on the slopes of the canyon walls.

The Manning-Rye Covered Bridge was also known as the Harpole Bridge. It was built in 1918 by the Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad. The top of the bridge wasn’t actually covered, but was left open when the bridge was built to accommodate electrical lines, as the original railroad using the bridge was electrical.
