The Aberfan disaster was a catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip in October 1966. Heavy rain caused a landslide which killed 116 children and 28 adults as it completely engulfed the local infant school.
It is to this day an emotive tragedy in Wales that is widely remembered for several reasons:
1. The shocking nature of the accident, and the age of most of its victims.
2. The failure of any person to face prosecution or fines despite an inquiry finding the National Coal Board to blame.
3. A political scandal regarding the allocation of funds in the aftermath.
This memorial can be found in the cemetery just a short distance from where the school once stood.
