About this spot
The Grove of the Patriarchs is the name of an impressive stand of ancient trees growing on a long, narrow, island in the Ohanapecosh River. It has been speculated that this island has contributed to the longevity of these particular trees by provided protection from the fires. As a result, some of the oldest and largest trees in Mt. Rainier National Park grow here. These massive trees are accessed by a 0.3 mile hike up the river, passing several large trees along the way, then crossing over to the island on a swaying suspension bridge. The trail then tunnels through leafy vine maples to reach a boardwalk which loops through this impressive grove.
