About this spot
Box Canyon is both geologically and visually fascinating. The short loop trail around the canyon is a must. The views are amazing but the canyon itself is very difficult to photograph. The deep and narrow canyon is the channel for the Muddy Fork of the Cowlitz River which is nearly lost in the dark depths. The creek can be viewed from the bridge at the upper end of the loop where it flows 115 feet below the rim of the canyon and from the car bridge at the lower end of the loop where the creek is 180 feet below the canyon rim. The other feature of interest at Box Canyon is the smoothly scoured rocks on the east side of the nature trail, created by long gone glaciers. These rocks have a very thorough covering of delicate moss, so please stay off of them.
