About this spot
Bench Lake is as good, or even better, location for viewing reflections of Mt. Rainier than the well known and overused Reflection Lakes. With less trees and forest creating a dark foreground between The Mountain and the lake, the view from Bench Lake is open and pleasing. And, best of all, the lake has not been overused and inflicted with “Closed for Revegetation” signs. Also, you are rarely hampered by a solid lineup of tripods at the best viewpoint. However, there is a price to pay for the isolation and solitude. Bench Lake is not located right along side the paved road. To reach the lakeshore requires a 0.7 mile walk on a moderately difficult trail. Also, as Bench Lake is not protected by trees on the north and east sides, the morning breezes often ruffle the waters and erase the prefect mountain reflections earlier than at Reflection Lakes.
