Top places to photograph in Isle Of Skye in 2024

These are the very best Isle Of Skye Instagram spots, curated by the PhotoHound team. If you've got limited time here, these are the must-see locations to shoot while you're in Isle Of Skye!

Fairy Glen

The Fairy Glen is a small, beautiful and rather unknown area on the Isle of Skye. When I first visited this place I thought I was part of a movie like The Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit. The mysterious stone circle and the setting sun behind the rock formation are the perfect ingredients for a great image.

Fairy Pools

The Fairy Pools must be the most enjoyable place to photograph waterfalls in the whole of Scotland. The stunning mountain backdrop and the crystal clear water flowing down the river makes for amazing photographs.

Neist Point

Perhaps one of the best places for sunset photography on the Isle of Skye. Neist Point offers spectacular views towards the small lighthouse and the epic cliffs with the setting sun casting perfect light onto the cliff. There are several viewpoints from which one of them is mostly full of photographers. I would recommend you to go to the first viewpoint which offers a fresh perspective. Just be careful and watch your steps! You can also walk towards the left side of the lighthouse and try to get some close up shots of it with the crushing waves.

Sligachan Bridge

Sligachan Bridge seems like it always has the perfect light to offer. Since the sun is setting between the two most prominent mountains in the far distance it always makes for a great stop when exploring Skye. There are several options to choose from when framing your composition – include the bridge, stand on the bridge and use the river as a leading line towards the Cuillins, go down low into the river and play with long exposure. It’s totally up to you. Don’t miss this spot when driving through Skye!

Talisker Bay

I immediately fell in love with Talisker Bay because of its impressive scenery. If you are looking for a place to be one with nature then you should visit Talisker Bay. Surrounded by steep cliffs the bay offers a beautiful beach with big black rocks to use as a foreground. The change of tides makes for great patterns in the sand which one can use to frame unique compositions. Please make sure to be careful when walking on these rocks – they are super slippery! Using filters can be great fun too and can make the difference between a snapshot and a professional looking seascape image. The sea stack provides the perfect background to balance your shot.

The Old Man of Storr

This is properly the most famous spot on the Island and definitely the busiest. The ‘Old Man’ is a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around.
As part of the Trotternish ridge, the Storr was created by a massive ancient landside, leaving one of the most photographed landscapes in the world.

The Quiraing

The Quiraing is stunningly beautiful and as exotic as its name. Never have I felt closer to nature and more exposed to the weather than up here. Lots of hiking opportunities with many breathtaking viewpoints make this spot to one of my favorites in all Scotland. The Quiraing landscapes look like they come straight out of a fantasy movie.

Portree Harbour

The village of Portree, situated on the east side of Skye overlooking a sheltered bay, is the capital of the Isle of Skye.
Portree is only about 200 years old and was created as a fishing village at the beginning of the 19th century by the then Lord MacDonald. The name Portree or Port Righ, King’s Port in Gaelic, (as on the road signs) is popularly thought to derive from a visit by King James V (of Scotland) in 1540, but the area around the harbour was called Portree or Portray long before the arrival of the king. Its name really comes from the Gaelic for Port on the Slope.
All in all, this is an incredible spot for landscape and seascape photographers who wants to capture the true essence of this historic town.

Dunvegan Castle

Dunvegan Castle is the seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, chief of the Clan MacLeod. The castle was built in the 13th century and developed piecemeal over the centuries. The castle is built on an elevated rock overlooking an inlet on the eastern shore of Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch.
The castle and its beautiful gardens are open to the public from May till October.

The Needle, Quiraing

This is one of the most recognised landmarks on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. This 37-meter tall rock pinnacle is known as the Needle. It is located in the heart of the Quiraing landslip in Trotternish. Although it is well known to many photographers, it is one of the less photographed locations due to its location and the level of physical difficulty.
