Driftwood Beach is located on a hammock - a low tree-covered rise surrounded by water. The ocean is wearing away the hammock leaving the trees behind.

Storm surge can reach tens of feet in major storms. Surge can carry driftwood into the marsh. This tree is on the land side of the marsh. This shot is looking roughly south. The hammock is the tree line on the left. The ocean lies beyond.

These two Copperhead snakes are huddling in the sun for warmth on a sunny tree branch in late October. They are venomous.

This is a cottonmouth. That name comes from the white oral cavity. This is a venomous water snake that is also called a water moccasin.

There is a water exhibit for turtles. The big turtle is a Florida Soft-Shelled Turtle. The little one below him appears to be a box turtle.

Portions of the boardwalk are only slghtly raised above ground level and may be covered with water during flood stages of the Conagree River. The trees at this section fo the trail are Water Tupelos. The moss on the tree trunks grows to the high water level. On the large tree in the right foreground that height is about 12'/3.7m.
