This bridge is a retrofit of an earlier rail crossing before the river was raised by Lower Granite Dam. The original swing draw span was phased out in favor of a new lift span, opening the river to barge traffic. The ports immediately upstream of this bridge make up Idaho's only seaport and allow inland wheat farmers to inexpensively transport their crops down the Snake and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific Ocean.

From where you park you'll notice above the shoulder a location that will give you a better view. As you're driving south to Celebration Park or the bridge you cannot help but notice the volcanic remains or the surrounding area and beyond the bridge.

Previous to the bridge's construction, ferries were the only way of spanning the Snake River. When Colonel William H Dewey proposed to build the bridge, plans were so complex that only five firms in the country were qualified to make a bid. The parts for the bridge were assembled in Chicago and then sent to Idaho by railroad. Construction on the bridge began in July of 1897 and was finished by the end of the summer. In total, the bridge weighs 450 tons. The bridge was retired from railroad use in 1947.

I watched a video by a geology professor from Central Washington University who spoke of a volcanic hotspot that began in Oregon moved eastward, and is now in NW Wyoming where Yellowstone National Park is located. Owyhee County is a county located in the southwestern corner of the state of Idaho. Owyhee County was created on December 31, 1863. The county is named as a corruption of the word Hawaii. Hawaiian fur trappers explored the area in 1819 and 1820. Etymology - Origin of Owyhee County Name Owyhee (O Y Hee) County is named for the Kingdom of Hawaii. Hawaiian fur trappers had explored (and had been mysteriously killed in) the area around 1820.
