About this spot
Spinalonga Island is located just off the main island of Crete, next to the village of Plaka.
It has an interesting history, having been under Venetian rule, and more recently it housed a leper colony.
Today, most of the fortress and the village buildings are in ruins, and the island is a tourist attraction, making for a great location to explore and document the decay.
