Shoot with care
Stay on trails to avoid stepping on fragile silversword seedlings and root systems. These plants were once ripped up and taken home by visitors as souvenirs. They now depend on management efforts for survival.

About this spot
While backpacking with the family in the crater of Haleakala National Park, we came across the most colorful and unique area, where the terrain varies from sand to rough sharp lava stones (a'a) and the grounds are pocked with the most beautiful plant I have ever seen, the Silver Sword (found only in this location). The nights are pitch black as this is clear sky area (thus the observatory located at the top of the trail)
