About this spot
York has been defended by walls of one form or another since Roman times. Substantial portions of the walls remain, and York has more miles of intact wall than any other city in England. They are known as York City Walls or the Bar Walls.

The city walls are accessible from 8am to dusk. See the web link for an access map and opening times throughout the year.
